Name: Robert Dummett Born: 15 Nov 1843, Braunton, North Devon Spouse: Helen Gould, m 14 Feb 1871 Hackney London Children (...5 of them...) Notes: Sent to London from the West Country (Exmoor?) when aged about 13 or 14. He had been apprenticed to a draper in Bristol, who sold him on to another drapers in Bishopsgate, London, but lost the piece of paper with the address on and could not find the premises. Knocked on the door of a wholesale drapers in the Shoreditch High Street, Jeremiah Rotherham, a Jewish firm, and was taken in. Worked for the firm, living in a garret on top of the shop, eventually becoming a travelling salesman. Met his wife Helen Gould at a haberdashery in Truro, Cornwall, whilst doing this work. Eventually became a partner in the business, and then the owner. Made a lot of money (¹.25m) from this and investing on the Stock Exchange, where he also lost it. Rescued his father from the workhouse. Died before 1925 Marriage certificate shows him as 'mercantile clerk, mantle manufacturer' at 1871 Birth certificate of eldest son shows him as woollen draper at 1873 Eldest son's marriage certificate has him as drapers warehouseman in 1895
